John P. Frank

In 1969 the Senate rejected President Nixon's nomination of Clement Haynsworth for the US Supreme Court. In this analysis the author uncovers the various strategies used by President Nixon to promote the nomination, and by the Senate to reject it. He places the Haynsworth nomination in a new historical context by showing it to be the turning point when the Senate began to focus on the for the court rather than simply to review their character and competence.
